Ernest F. Blasé

Zazi Fellow

Dr. Blasé is a recognized expert in several diverse technology areas including high energy density batteries, cutting edge sensor development for nuclear search and detection, and subsurface radar instrumentation for locating tunnel and weapon caches. As such he has held senior executive positions in large and small corporations and several agencies of the U.S. Government.

After completing his PhD in P-Chem and MS in Physics at Vanderbilt University he worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory on a highly classified Air Force program related to analysis of foreign nuclear weapon design and effects. This led to a very significant role as an E.G. and G. Program manager in nuclear technology, which included development of specific sensors for weapons effects and instrumentation of a number of above ground nuclear bomb test in Nevada.

Dr. Blasé as Manager of the Sciences Directorate at E.G. and G. was a guiding force in the establishment of the Nuclear Emergency Search Team (NEST), a robust organization using fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and ground-based search equipment. NEST’s principle function is responding to terrorist nuclear threats.

In 1970 he co-founded Geophysical Survey Systems to capitalize on the use of video pulse radar to locate subsurface military targets, i.e., tunnels and small arms. At GSS he was able to extend this concept to civilian applications principally in urban areas to locate buried utilities.

During the period 1972-1981 he held a variety of Government positions. From 1972-1974 he was assistant to the Technical Director of the Naval Intelligence and Support Center and simultaneously held a similar position with the Naval Intelligence Command. From1974-1978 he was a Program Manager Advanced Concepts TTO at DARPA doing fundamental research on shaped charges and fuel air explosives.

In 1978 he became Director, Office of Advanced Technology Projects for the Department of Energy. This office was established by the DoE to initiate funding for several large-scale projects, which were outside the mainstream of DoE funded programs.

In 1981 Dr. Blasé became a member of the technical staff of R&D Associates, where he served as a principal in converting technical ambitions to technical accomplishments for Government organizations involved in various intelligence activities.

Finally he once again became an entrepreneur and in 1991 founded ISAT, a leader in special battery technology needs for select Government Agencies.
